Holland is in Europe, right?

**If you don't read spanish, you just have to roll down and you will find an english version of this post + extra photos!**

As I wrote before, it was not long ago when i didn't know much about this country, but in just three months I have learnt a lot. It started with the preparation for the Inburgering 1 Exam. Let me tell you briefly about that...

When Onno and I decided that we wanted to live our lives together, we went to the dutch Embassy in Buenos Aires to learn more about how to do it. The information we got surprised me: I expected to be asked to gather some personal documents (like birth certificate, proof of income, marital status certificate, etc, etc, etc), but I was also asked to pass a language test. The girl at the Embassy was speaking in English so i could understand, and she smiled at us and said: it's a very simple test, really basic dutch. Well... I didn't speak dutch at all!

Inburgering 1
That afternoon, I decided that I wanted to pass the test before going to India; that left me only two months to learn the language in a way to be able to pass the test. Mission Impossible? May be, but I was badly in love (I am still) and I promissed myself that I would do it.
It's quite difficult to find dutch teachers in Buenos Aires, or private institutes where to learn the language. After doing my best research in Google, I called the Embassy again and ended up joining a group at the Argentine-Dutch Trading Chamber, which had already started 2 months before I came up.

Those months I dived into the language and dutch culture with all my heart: history, geography, the language, traditions, I had so much to learn! Everything is so different, so new! My ears were not used to dutch sound at all, so -in order to train them- I started to go to bed with my laptop and listen all night to a dutch radio frequency. Yes, i know, that might have been TOO much, but I was eager to know more and to learn, and most important of all... to pass the test.
I sat for the Inburgering 1 on Dec 1st 2009, after one and a half months of preparation. Two long hours after I entered the building, I dialed Onno's number in Holland and he heard: "Schat, Ik ben geslaagd", which means "Honey, I've been aproved"!!

Reading about Holland
Onno gave me a book for Christmas, so I could read about the dutch and be aware of some curiosities. The book is super easy to read, with plenty of pictures and a lot of fun. Facts and Myths about the Icons of Netherlands are well described and the images give a good "taste" of the dutch world.

Let´s consider how was I prepared for my first trip to Holland:
- I was speaking basic dutch
- I knew the meaning of the word "gezellig" (dutch word to describe togetherness and comfort)
- I knew what most people have in Holland for breakfast, including "Hagelslag" (chocolate sprinkles) and "Ontbijkoek" (spiced cake)
- I was ready to try "drops", a type of typical candies, with a weird taste and look.
- The colours of their flag? Of course I knew them!
- And the myth about all the dutch wearing clogs?? 100% false!
- And many more things...

Ok, i was ready to go to Holland. Here I come!

  1. Leti!! Empieza tu aventura... welcome to my world hehe

That's the spirit!

Dropjes ? Tastes to plastic and smells like medicine !

@ Anita: everything takes some time. I have to arrange loads of things before making new friends! But i'm very possitive and open minded, and i think that's a good start, don't you think? And about the dropjes, as I wrote to Eber, I love the sweet ones! :-) I'm doing my Inburgering in every possible way!
