When the time pass by you start to think that you are getting used to the fact that you are far away from your home-land and that most of your loving ones are far away, really far away. But that is a fragile sensation of stability and it could be easily shaken by unexpected situations that evoke memories...

Several years ago, when the princess Máxima got married with the Dutch prince, the wedding was broadcasted live. I lived in Argentina by then and I remember vividly my emotion when I heard Carel Kraayenhof playing Adios Nonino (by Astor Piazzolla) with his bandoneon and when I saw the tears of the new princess rolling down her cheeks.
The same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Onno and I went to a gala dinner and at some point in the night we were invited into a big room where a "surprise show" was going to take place: Carel Kraayenhof and his band were going to perform for 30 minutes non-stop tango.
By the end of the first tango my eyes were full of tears, the memories came to my mind bringing images from my childhood, my house in Temperley (where I grew up), the sunny weekends with my dad... my brothers, the thousands of days that I lived in Argentina listening to bandoneons without even noticing.

When the second tango started I had to leave the room. The lament of that bandoneon was much stronger than my attempt to hold my tears. You always belong to the place you were born, no matter how much time passes by.

Carel Kraayhof´s performance si fabulous. You can listen and enjoy it in this link (crying is allowed).
