Y finalmente fuimos a esquiar!

- Me encanta esquiar!
Gracias, my amor, por tu paciencia!

Onno has a very good friend, Paul. They enjoy going on vacation together and specially... going skiing. Before I met Onno, he had gone with Paul (just the 2 of them) several times on Wintersports. Caro (Paul's wife) always finds it great that the 2 big friends take some days off to go jumping on the snow like little boys.

This year they decided -for Wintersports- to make a Special edition, a very special edition. Both gentlemen packed this time their ski jackets and snow-gloves, ski-sets, but also... their partners and kids!
So the 7 of us went on Wintersports to France: Caro & Paul + 3 children and Onno & I.

This was the first time in my life that I was going on a Wintersport vacation. Of course I didn't know how to ski when Onno came for the first time with the idea to go skiing. But I took classes, oh yes I did! I took several classes on Sunday mornings on a rolling carpet in the Sportcentrum close to our home.

And we finally went skiing! We drove 17 hours to Les Menuires (France) and we stayed in a fantastic cabin that easily accomodate all of us!
We had a wonderful time all together. We cooked, we laughed, we enjoyed some cheese and wine. I played with the boys (Sander and Duko) who remind me my little nephews Nano and Sebi (I miss them so much!)...

We bought a 6-day pass and after the week I have learnt quite a few things:
- I love to skiiiiii ! I can fall countless times and I will still love it.
- Next time I will definitively try snowboard!
- When the weather is not nice and the visibility is very limited, it's better for me to stay somewhere inside with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. I get sick when everything looks white and I am not able to distinguish what is sloop and what sky.
- Onno is a fantastic ski-instructor. Thanks, hon, for your patience!
- My knees are much more flexible that I expected. They can twist 180 degrees on my skis while falling without breaking apart!
- Wintersports means ski and relax...

food...

and more relax!

This Special Edition will not be the last one for sure!

Holy cows' Parade

I have written that Onno and I have been travelling in India. There are thousands of cows in India and -as you might know- they are for Hinduism holy symbols of wealth, strength, abundance. They are revered and untouchable.

Not until today I learnt to know that there is a 'holy' connection between Dutch and Indian cows. How is that? Well, Holland has many, many cows, there are regular cows but there also 'holy cows'. These holy cows are .... 'their car' for the Dutchmen. Yes, Ladies and Gentleman, their cars are reverenced.

And the Dutch know how to make their 'holy cows' look beautiful.
And they love to prepare them nicely for the holiday seasons.

Last summer (Jul'10) when we went to Paris I noticed the countless Dutch plates that were going to France dragging a caravan. All cars looked alike: caravans + as many bikes as family members were travelling.

This winter (Feb'11) we went to France again, this time for wintersports. Again the neverending parade of Dutch license plates, but now the 'holy cows' were carrying big skiboxes. It took us 14 hours to reach our destination so I had some time to look around and I saw an enormous amount of skiboxes (which are hug boxes placed on the rooftop of the car and they can keep ski equipment and more stuff). It is quite funny: even huge expensive cars that have lots of space in the car itself, carry those boxes.

The Dutch are so also synchronized that they all take their 'holy cows' on a ride to France on the same date, causing massive traffic jams.
Traffic jams are particularly scary in France during these seasons. The Dutch even have a name for the busiest day on French routes during the summer: de zwarte zaterdag (the black Saturday, usually at the end of July). So they know in advance: black Saturday = massive traffic jams, not funny. But still they go ..... every year.
It is quite curious and it fascinates me. Especially since the Dutch praise themselves on practical skills and efficiency. To me, their holiday behavior is not among those. I have to do more investigation on this.

We are planning a new trip to Paris for Easter with my mum. I will do some undercover investigation about this Holy Cow Parades. I am so glad that Onno is not so fanatic about his car!

Breathtaking views

Paz, belleza, silencio, absoluto encantamiento...

This year (2010) my breath was completely taken away two times when I stood in front of two incredible buildings, authentic pieces of art.

::: First time was in January in Agra City (India) :::
It was almost 2 PM and we walked with great excitement the 500 meters between our hotel and the complex. We passed by the front gardens and saw a big red gate, huge, really tall. Our eyes were not able to anticipate any view behind that massive arch.
I felt Onno's hand into mine and I pressed it while climbing the steps to cross the red gate. The tears appeared in my eyes in the very minute I could see it. There it was: white, magnificent, absolutely quiet in the horizon. My heart was overwhelmed by its beauty. I had seen many pictures and videos before getting to that point, but God, that landscape was painfully beautiful!
Peace, beauty, silence, absolute enchantment... I closed my eyes and open them again, slowly. It was real, I was there, right in front of marvelous Taj Mahal.

Onno's hand guided me forward to the fantastic gardens that coronate the glory of Taj Mahal. "Come, my love, let's get closer"

::: Second time was in July in Paris (France) :::
We took a couple of days on vacation and drove from Holland to Paris to camped 20 minutes far from the city.
-"So what's the plan? What do you want to go first?" - asked Onno during our first day in Paris.
-"I want to see the Tower, of course! FIRST the Tower!!! - replied Leti
And we took the subway in the direction of the Tower. But all of a sudden Onno grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the train 2 stations BEFORE the tower's one. Great was my disappointment when he suggested that we could walk a little bit in that area. He had to drag me (literally) to Trocadero because I was insisting in going straight to the Tower. We passed a big museum while walking towards an open area with a lot of people. I was still complaining when Onno push me towards an overwhelming view of the Eiffel Tower. He didn't tell me that form Trocadero you could have an amazing view of it, he just took me and pretended not to hear my complaints.
Again, my breath was taken away. The Tower was showing its beauty to me with a perfect blue sky as a background. Absolutely brilliant.

So what is the next breathtaking visit? A short trip to the moon?
I guess that I'm a little bit spoiled! :-)
