Happy Anniversary for Onno and me!

The plan for celebrating our 1st Anniversary was to spend the day in Amsterdam: get ourselves and our bikes in a train to the city and cycle around Amsterdam. Simply because it is a beautiful city that is great to discover by bike, especially when the sun is shining (which has been the case for many days in a row). So on the schedule were: picnic in the Vondelpark, play card games, cycle through Jordaan and de Pijp (both new for me), and just enjoy the sun. Sounds good, hm?
Well, this is Holland and the weather changed and it changed our plans about the excursion. However, the alternative we found ended up being even better than the original plan!

We went to the Eden Amsterdam American Hotel to have breakfast. It's a fancy Amsterdam-style hotel right in the middle of the popular Leidseplein. Onno knew that they have a beautiful breakfast in a great room.
What we did not know is that on Sundays midday they serve such a fantastic bruch(fusion of the words breakfast and lunch). We did not know that those days there is a live jazz show. We did not know that this place was going to become -since today- our destination for all future Anniversaries!!!

It was absolutely great. The decoration of the restaurant is Art Deco, with vitreaux in the upper windows that create a fantastic atmosphere with the daylight. Though we were told at the door that we might not get a place without reservation, we managed to get a table at just 1 meter from the musicians at the piano and the traverso flaute, who -not paying attention to the the customers- were giving a relaxing jazz concert in the center of the room.

The table with appetizers/cold dishes was delicious. I counted 6 or 7 different types of cheeses (MY weak point), salads and plenty of vegetarian options. Paradise for me! Onno also found quite a few options with fish (including salmon) and bacon (HIS weak point). I have no words to describe the breads, absolutely lovely.

And the main courses were also pretty promising, though at that point I was quite full. That did not keep Onno from having the freshly prepared gamba´s and marinated grilled tuna. After the India style prepared meat with rice.

We took some time to relax and enjoy some coffee after the brunch (that was indeed more like a "huge lunch") and the waiters brought candles for all the tables where there was someone celebrating a birthday. I looked at Onno with a childish look that was claiming "I want THAT too" and immediately we (well, actually I did) called the waiter to bring a candle for us! It was our Anniversary too!!!

At this point I was ready to accept the end of a sensational brunch, but no: the sweet buffet was coming. A table was served with all kind of desserts: tiramisu, cake with white chocolate, cake with brown chocolate, a massive icecream mountain with whipped cream, ´soesjes´ (like a profiterole pastry baked into round puffs), fresh fruit salad and some other things. Can you believe that Onno tried them all? And not only once, but twice. And after that he dared to explain that he was feeling "a little bit full". Pffffffff

Need I say more? It deserves a visit! This fantastic restaurant is not precisely cheap. But we believe that it is a very special location to celebrate a special occasion with a special someone. And so we did. And so we will do next year, and the next one, and the next one....

Where are my ingredients?

* Unos días atrás decidí cocinarle algo rico a Onno.

Long before coming to Holland I knew that there were some products that were not going to be easy to find around the corner.
The more important one was the "yerba" and from that I managed to bring 4 kilos during my moving (2 kilos in Onno's luggage and 2 kilos in mine). For those readers that are not from Argentina or Uruguay, let me tell you that in Argentina people drink a very special type of tea called "mate". Most of the adults that grew up in Argentina (with a very few exceptions) drink it on a daily basis. And let me tell you too that I'm not an exception in this case, and I adore "mate".
And is 4 kilos a lot? Not at all, every mate-drinker knows that it is too little, but i'm trying to drink it only when I REALLY miss it and I already found a place in Germany where I can buy yerba on line and have it delivered in Holland.
So we could say that the yerba-issue is covered for now.

But what about other ingredients?

* During my first visit to The Netherlands (Feb'10) I wanted to prepare "empanadas". In Argentina empanadas are served at parties as a starter or as the main course. They are made by folding a circular-shaped dough around the stuffing, which can consist of many things such as meat, chicken, tuna or vegetables. If you plan to make big quantities of empanadas, you probably decide to buy the dough already made at the supermarket, and you only prepare the stuffing and fold them.
Bad news: the "dough for empanadas" is not available in Holland. Nevertheless, with some research and good advice I found Bladerdeeg (that comes in square-shaped units) and I'm still doing some tests to achieve the argentine flavour!

* A couple of days ago I decided to bake something nice for Onno. What could be better than the famous dessert that my friend Sol always prepares?. It's a delicious vanilla pudding with warm creamy chocolate sauce on top. Glup!
Big was my deception when I left Albert Heijn (one of the biggest supermarket chains in The Netherlands) without one of the most important ingredients: the pionono. "Pionono" is a thin dough already cooked, like a base of cake, super soft and smooth, that is used in Argentina to prepare sweet or saulty rolls. I got the confirmation that there is NO pionono available in Holland and I can not prepare my friend's dessert!
But that is not all! How am I going to prepare for my love the typical argentine "dulce de leche roll" (like the one in the following picture)??
That is a real fatality!

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm trying to show proof here that I am truly motivated to prepare some argentine dishes in Holland. But what can I do? Some ingredients are simply hiding from me!! I guess I will have to be creative and innovative. I will succeed.

Calorie counters' nightmare

**If you don't read spanish, you just have to roll down and you will find an english version of this post + extra photos!**

.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*. E S P A Ñ O L .*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.

"How to eat an stroopwafel".

.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*. E N G L I S H .*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.

The dutch patisserie could happen to be a real nightmare if you are planning to control your weight.

I realized about this little detail within the very first hour that I was in Holland. To welcome me home Onno made coffee and offered me some of the most delicious cookies I've ever tried. In fact, he brought to the table a small bag with circle-shaped cookies that changed my life for ever: Stroopwafels.
Stroopwafels are a typical dutch delicacy.

They are made with 2 quite thin layers of waffles. Then a filling made from syrup, brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon, is spread in between the waffle halves, which glues them together. Yummieeee !!

I found this funny video that shows how to properly eat a stroopwafel. "How to eat an stroopwafel".
I asked Onno if he eats stroopwafels like the way it's explained in the video but he looked at me as if I were drunk. He simply answered: "I've been living in Holland for 38 years, and to eat stroopwafels you just open the bag and eat them as fast as you can"....

Another nightmare are the cookies! So many types and sooooo delicious. With chocolate blocks on top of them, with caramel, cinnamon, with hundreds of chocolate chips, fresh, crispy. You can think about "the cookie of your dreams" (if you have one, otherwise think about your favourite one) and I can promise you that the dutch cookies will exceed your expectations.

So when you come to Holland be prepared to gain some weight. But it's for a good cause! And in any case, do you know which is the best way to get over a temptation?... Of course: surrender to it! :-)
