Sint Maarten

On 11 November many provinces in Holland celebrate Sint Maarten's Day. Even though it is very popular, noone has been able to explain me the real origins of this Dutch tradition. But that is not really important, because what really matters to every kid is that on the evening of 11 November they can go door by door with their self-made hand-crafted lanterns to sing Sint Maarten songs and get -in return- candies, lots and lots and lots of candies!!

Tonight it was the first time that we participate. Noah (our eldest son) is now almost 3 year old and has decorated his own lantern at the kindergarden. He also learned some songs and practiced a lot.
At the beginning Noah did not really get the idea of singing and getting candies in return. But it only took him 2 or 3 houses to understand it and from then on, he started a non-stop tour with his friend Thijs. One door bell for Thijs, next door bell for Noah and they went on and on and on....
They were simply adorable, truly lovely to watch. Can't wait for next year when Fedde (our youngest son) will also walk with his lantern!

The way to a man's heart

El cumpleaños de Onno fue en Agosto. I me gusta mucho celebrar los cumpleaños.

Onno's birthday was in August. And I like to celebrate birthdays very much.

Last year (2009) in August Onno was in Australia for his birthday. But by the end of that month he flew back to Argentina "to see me again" after having met each other me only for 4 days!! To celebrate his belated birthday and his arrival I made him a huge carton-box and folded it with the colors of Dutch flag. And I took the box with me to the airport. How big was the box? Well, let's just say that it was apx 1,80 mt tall and it was made to put ME inside it (as a surprise). he he

This year (2010) it was the first time we could celebrate his birthday together in our Dutch home. Again, I wanted to make a present with a personal touch. This time I was a little bit more traditional and I chose for a cake, but a PROPER one.

So I made a beautiful birthday cake: the core was chocolate cake and I filled it with one layer of Nutella and chocolate chips and a second layer of peaches and perfectly whipped Chantilly cream. I used Argentine dulce de leche on the top (that I brought from Buenos Aires) and finished it with strawberries, red fruits, more cream and chocolate chips. Glup!
Onno went crazy! He confiscated the cake rigth away and in highly exceptional cases he would serve a tiny portion to his guests. Much of it went straight into his own stomach.

So probably the proverb is true: "The way to man's heart... is through his stomach". What do you think?

Go, Go, Argentina

Y ¿qué voy a hacer?

Vamos, Vamos, Argentina!!

Today the Argentine Team played the first match of the Football World Cup Championship, and we won 1-0 against Nigeria. Well done, guys!

I have to confess that I have never been very passionate for sports. However, when it's about the Olyimpic Games and/or the Football World Cup....... I'm pretty fanatic too. And today was the first time in my life that I watched a match of our football team... outside Argentina. With dutch reporters giving the comments... in dutch. Highly unusual too.

Though, there were a couple of things that made me feel at home:
1) I had brought a small argentine flag in one of my suitcases. Onno put the flag in the front of the house! :-)

2) I put on my blue-and-white t-shirt and I stayed the whole day with it. Even while visiting the birthday of a kid of one of Onno´s friends.

3) When the game started we opened the connection on skype with my sister Joji's house and we watched the game "together": my sister and her family in Argentina and Onno and I in Holland. We even sang together some songs to cheer up the Argentine team; my nephew was waving an argentine flag while my sis and I sang. Pretty funny!

And something else is new in this tournament: I have to support two teams this time....so it seems.

This coming monday, Holland (or "oranje" as the dutch team in orange t-shirts are known here) plays it´s first game of this tournament. So what am I going to do? Well, Onno bought me an orange dress (that comes with packs of Bavaria beer) so I will wear it to cheer for the dutch team.
It's well known that the dutch are very fanatic cheering for their team. Everything has turned to orange during the last days: complete neighbourhoods, shops, bridges, everything has been decorated with flags, strings, dolls etc. In the supermarket crazyness has moved to orange sausages, orange cakes, orange plants, orange cookies..... you name it and they sell it in orange. And Onno starts to look already nervous (and is it possible that his skin is looking slightly orange too?).

In any case, my heart will allways be blue and white! Of course. So.... Go, Go, Argentina!!

Anniversary # 1

Happy Anniversary for Onno and me!

The plan for celebrating our 1st Anniversary was to spend the day in Amsterdam: get ourselves and our bikes in a train to the city and cycle around Amsterdam. Simply because it is a beautiful city that is great to discover by bike, especially when the sun is shining (which has been the case for many days in a row). So on the schedule were: picnic in the Vondelpark, play card games, cycle through Jordaan and de Pijp (both new for me), and just enjoy the sun. Sounds good, hm?
Well, this is Holland and the weather changed and it changed our plans about the excursion. However, the alternative we found ended up being even better than the original plan!

We went to the Eden Amsterdam American Hotel to have breakfast. It's a fancy Amsterdam-style hotel right in the middle of the popular Leidseplein. Onno knew that they have a beautiful breakfast in a great room.
What we did not know is that on Sundays midday they serve such a fantastic bruch(fusion of the words breakfast and lunch). We did not know that those days there is a live jazz show. We did not know that this place was going to become -since today- our destination for all future Anniversaries!!!

It was absolutely great. The decoration of the restaurant is Art Deco, with vitreaux in the upper windows that create a fantastic atmosphere with the daylight. Though we were told at the door that we might not get a place without reservation, we managed to get a table at just 1 meter from the musicians at the piano and the traverso flaute, who -not paying attention to the the customers- were giving a relaxing jazz concert in the center of the room.

The table with appetizers/cold dishes was delicious. I counted 6 or 7 different types of cheeses (MY weak point), salads and plenty of vegetarian options. Paradise for me! Onno also found quite a few options with fish (including salmon) and bacon (HIS weak point). I have no words to describe the breads, absolutely lovely.

And the main courses were also pretty promising, though at that point I was quite full. That did not keep Onno from having the freshly prepared gamba´s and marinated grilled tuna. After the India style prepared meat with rice.

We took some time to relax and enjoy some coffee after the brunch (that was indeed more like a "huge lunch") and the waiters brought candles for all the tables where there was someone celebrating a birthday. I looked at Onno with a childish look that was claiming "I want THAT too" and immediately we (well, actually I did) called the waiter to bring a candle for us! It was our Anniversary too!!!

At this point I was ready to accept the end of a sensational brunch, but no: the sweet buffet was coming. A table was served with all kind of desserts: tiramisu, cake with white chocolate, cake with brown chocolate, a massive icecream mountain with whipped cream, ´soesjes´ (like a profiterole pastry baked into round puffs), fresh fruit salad and some other things. Can you believe that Onno tried them all? And not only once, but twice. And after that he dared to explain that he was feeling "a little bit full". Pffffffff

Need I say more? It deserves a visit! This fantastic restaurant is not precisely cheap. But we believe that it is a very special location to celebrate a special occasion with a special someone. And so we did. And so we will do next year, and the next one, and the next one....
